Why Do Companies Migrate to the Cloud?

The number one reason companies migrate to the cloud is to capitalize on better performance based on increased speed and agility. On top of this, companies are able to utilize a plethora of services like storage, compute, databases, data analytics, AI, and continuous integration.

Many companies consolidate their data centers in order to increase workforce productivity, modernize technology and digital transformation programs, reduce infrastructure sprawl, increase data security, and improve their bottom lines by reducing IT expenditures.

Types of Cloud Migration Explained

There are multiple types of cloud migrations for enterprises. Transferring data and applications from on-premise, local data centers to the public cloud is a common model.

Moving data from local, on-premise data centers to a private cloud is another option for enterprises.

Transferring applications and data from one cloud provider to another cloud is known as the cloud-to-cloud migration model.

The hybrid cloud model is a combination of keeping data and applications on-premise and also in a private and third-party public cloud. Hybrid clouds combine a public cloud and a private cloud by allowing data and applications to be shared between the two. Storcom can securely connect your company’s dedicated hosting environment to other data center locations and the private and public clouds of your choice, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure®, VMware® and Google Cloud Platform™. For the ultimate in hybrid/multi-cloud flexibility, let Storcom help build your hybrid cloud environment. We back our cloud services with 24x7x365 support.

Multi-cloud models are when organizations use more than one cloud vendor. This enables companies to have flexibility with their data and allows them to leverage the strengths of each cloud platform to suit their specific IT needs.

Lastly, an organization can choose to uncloud, decloud, or perform a reverse cloud migration by moving their data and applications off of the cloud and back into local, on-premise data centers.

What Steps Do I Need to Take to Migrate to the Cloud

Unfortunately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach when migrating apps and data to the Cloud. Each company and their data, applications, infrastructure, and architecture are different. As a result, many organizations don’t know the proper steps to take and are ill-prepared when undertaking a cloud migration internally.

  • First and foremost, a proper strategy needs to be in place before any cloud migration occurs since not all legacy apps and infrastructure were built to run effectively in cloud environments, plus many organizations don’t have the resources to create a cloud migration plan.
  • Another concern is that data migration will often strain project budgets if the right architecture is not in place.
  • Companies might choose to not make any modifications before moving an application to the new hosting environment, which is known as “lift-and-shift migration.” Other times, it is necessary to make changes to the application’s architecture or coding prior to the migration.
  • Ensuring the security of your sensitive data outside of on-prem infrastructure isn’t an easy task, either.
  • As a result, digital transformations are best executed incrementally to ensure a proper and effective migration to the Cloud.

Notable Cloud Migration Statistics

  • “83% of enterprise workloads will be in the Cloud by 2020.” Forbes
  • “Nearly 60 percent of North American enterprises now rely on public cloud platforms, five times the percentage that did just five years ago.” Forrester
  • “74% of tech CFOs say that cloud computing had the most measurable impact on their businesses in 2017.” Forbes
  • Gartner predicts that by 2025, 80% of organizations will have migrated away from on-premise data centers towards colocation, hosting, and the Cloud.
  • The top three concerns are security (52%), managing and tracking cloud spend (44%), and a lack of internal cloud skills (31%). Turbonomic
  • ForcePoint reported that only 7% of businesses have good visibility of all their critical data.
  • According to RedLock, 49% of all databases are not encrypted.
  • “There are quite a few technologies poised to become the next big thing in cloud computing for 2019. To name one, adding to the great hybrid cloud equation are next generation containers and container management platforms” Loom Systems

What are the Advantages of Using a Hybrid Cloud?

Learn More

The hybrid cloud allows for maximized IT utility, resilience, and agility. Public and private clouds have different areas where they each excel, so companies are able to reap the benefits of each platform when using a hybrid cloud solution. Private clouds enable organizations to scale up and down based on demand, which often comes with a lower cost, and private cloud solutions offer superior security and control. Some companies prefer that their critical data is stored in a private cloud, and other data and applications can be stored in a public cloud to lower cost. When using a hybrid cloud, your company is able to find the most suitable use cases for your IT environment and your cloud experience and utility is not limited by an either/or decision.

Those of us who owned motorcycles over the years know that a “bone stock” bike won’t be stock for long. It’s common to replace the exhaust system with aftermarket, much louder pipes. Also, the seat is often swapped out for something more comfortable and stylish. Don’t forget a windshield, fuel management systems, and upgraded handlebars. With that you’ve spent about one-fourth of the cost of the motorcycle on a bunch of stuff that does not add anything to the core functionality of the motorcy…

Cloud security secrets your cloud provider doesn’t want you to know

In 1999, I was an eager high school student with dreams of working in the video production industry.
