Private Cloud Defined

What is a Private Cloud?

The definition of a “private cloud” is computing services that are offered either over the Internet or a private internal network that is only available to select users instead of the general public. A private cloud, also known as an “internal” or “corporate cloud,” gives companies many of the benefits of the public cloud (self-service, scalability, and flexibility) with the additional control and customization from dedicated IT resources over a computing infrastructure that is hosted on-premise or in a data center of an IT solutions provider.

Additionally, private cloud solutions deliver a much higher level of security and privacy through company firewalls and internal hosting to ensure that operations and critical data are not accessible to third-parties.

There are two models for cloud computing services that can be delivered in a private cloud. The first is “infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS)” where a company uses infrastructure resources like compute, network, and storage-as-a-service (STaaS). The second is “platform-as a-service (PaaS)” where companies deliver everything from cloud-based applications to enterprise applications.

Examples of Private Cloud Solutions

Examples of Private Cloud Solutions

IT Managed Services Providers (MSPs) and cloud integrator companies offer private cloud solutions in association with either open source or proprietary licensed software platforms. Some MSPs specialize in Linux, and others in Windows solutions. A cloud computing services provider like Storcom can be a cost-saving resource for private cloud migration and management vs. in-house talent and recruiting. Each complex business organization has a unique IT strategy where private cloud solutions modernize archaic legacy IT operations.

Many large companies have governance policies that prohibit sensitive data or software from being hosted offsite. The traditional corporate data center must be upgraded to cloud standards with new virtualization formats and container solutions such as Docker and Kubernetes predominating. Private cloud solutions can be used to host databases for internal operations, or web and mobile applications on high-speed, on-prem hardware.

Private Cloud Solutions vs. Public Cloud Solutions

Private Cloud Solutions vs. Public Cloud Solutions

The main advantage of public cloud solutions over private cloud solutions is the basic cost of operations. Fiber connections, backup power supplies, cooling, and round-the-clock security, an on-prem private data center is very expensive to manage. Add the cost of dedicated IT systems administration staff, constant upgrades of hardware, maintenance, breakdowns, and service outages. Public cloud solutions save businesses an average of 40% over in-house private cloud data center operations.

Businesses that can’t compromise data security choose private cloud solutions, even if these are more expensive than Google, AWS, or Azure to operate. Otherwise, management cannot guarantee unauthorized super-user access to the hardware. Most public cloud providers have security measures in place. Old ideas of public cloud security are being defeated, but many corporations still will not abandon in-house data centers.

How Do I Mitigate Challenges of Deploying a Hybrid Cloud Environment?

Learn More

Creating a hybrid cloud migration strategy as part of your IT infrastructure is your first step to mitigating hybrid cloud migration challenges. Not all public clouds are created equal, so it is important to decide which public cloud provider is best for your organization. Having a strong grasp on your data and processes will help enable your cloud integration to go more smoothly.

Also, it is important to note that the majority of successful cloud migrations aren’t typically completed in a single effort or project. It is wise to implement smaller projects with the end goal of a hybrid environment. Your company may benefit from building a limited hybrid cloud model in order to support specific workloads, and then build out additional services as your efforts in a hybrid cloud initiative show the benefits and value to your business and stakeholders.

How does a Hybrid Cloud Increase Agility?

Learn More

Private networks are costly to build, maintain, and expand. As a result, they limit a company’s agility to take advantage of new technologies and opportunities. Hybrid clouds enables companies to reap the benefits of both a public and private cloud. Business-critical data, applications, and operations can remain in a private cloud environment. The power of cloud computing can be leveraged in a public cloud environment. Public cloud computing resources increase a business’ scalability and agility. This is done by facilitating the ability to develop new applications. Cloud computing also runs analytics that would have been beyond the scope of a smaller organization with only a few servers to utilize. Hybrid clouds level the playing fields for companies of all sizes to compete with competitors who are more established. Rapid growth is now possible.

How does a Hybrid Cloud Increase Security?

Learn More

Security in a hybrid cloud model is increased when organizations leverage both the security of a private cloud and the speed and services of a private cloud. Although public cloud providers go to great lengths to protect the data of their clients, a public cloud is inherently more open and vulnerable than a private cloud or internal networks. This makes organizations more susceptible to cyber and ransomware attacks and other forms of data leakage. Occasionally, a public cloud is just too risky for some companies. A hybrid cloud model makes more sense in these cases since data can be protected in a private cloud and a public cloud can be used for power and resources.

How does a Hybrid Cloud Increase Speed?

Learn More

A major advantage of hybrid cloud architecture is speed. While a multi-cloud or purely public cloud environment might be inherently faster than a hybrid cloud environment, IT staff is able to reduce latency and can optimize their network to make sure data is where it needs to be.

Hybrid cloud environments leverage edge computing architectures to further increase speed and locate crucial data and applications for its end users. Private portions of a hybrid cloud can be configured to be more purpose built to maximize resources and enable users to work faster and ultimately be more productive. Organizations can offload non-critical operations to a public cloud and configure their network to handle solely critical traffic.

How does a Hybrid Cloud Increase Control?

Learn More

A key benefit of a hybrid cloud solution is increased control for IT personnel. Companies can customize their private data and applications to a hybrid cloud architecture model in order to adjust their IT infrastructure to their needs. Increased control post-hybrid cloud migration is achieved when internal IT staff retains the ability to manage critical operations and IT infrastructure like servers and hardware.

Having control over IT assets in a responsive hybrid cloud architecture model is advantageous for organizations who want responsiveness in their cloud environments. Today’s fast-changing IT landscape has companies making changes frequently and adjusting and reconfiguring their cloud environments. Vital data assets need to be protected during those changes in order to have minimal disruption. Companies also need to be prepared for changes in their cloud provider’s SLAs and sudden loss of services.

What is a Hybrid Cloud?

Learn More

Put simply, a “hybrid cloud” is a cloud computing strategy which enables companies to combine different cloud environments that are connected to each other. These cloud environments can be private or third-party clouds, public clouds, virtualized infrastructures, or a mixture of on-premises and cloud computing environments.

Hybrid clouds are configured to operate independently of each other, and data that is shared across the communication channels is highly encrypted. Hybrid clouds are incredibly stable since a company’s critical data and workloads are stored in the private cloud.

What are the Downsides of Using a Private Cloud?

Learn More

The private cloud is extremely secure; however, data stored in a private cloud will likely still have to be transmitted into the public cloud in order to run analytics, processes, and applications, so extensive encryption needs to be implemented in order to keep data as secure as possible. IT staff still retains control of the structure of the public cloud; therefore, access to the data must be managed and strict protocols should be implemented on how those critical assets are managed.
