a. Business Challenges

This large American designer, manufacturer, and marketer of high-end tools and equipment had growing demands for capacity on a regular basis for their IT infrastructure. Storcom came in, evaluated their needs, and came up with an IT strategy. As a result, our client had a clear roadmap for not only the current needs but long-term needs for archive data as well as a holistic data protection strategy. Further, our client wanted a solution that would be highly scalable and reliable. They also needed something that was easy to administer and cost-effective across the lifecycle of their data. As part of the requirements, this client needed a solution that they could incorporate a DR/BC strategy at one of their other data centers.

b. Storcom’s Solution

Storcom implemented a multi-tiered approach to their storage requirements. We used high-performance, low latency tier 0 storage for their most demanding business critical applications. Storcom also provided mid-tier storage for the bulk of their data that is used on a regular basis and an archival tier of storage for data that does not get access frequently but still needs to be online. Next, we implemented a robust HSM methodology and solution that allows for automation of this data movement. Finally, Storcom designed and implemented a holistic data protection solution as part of our solution. Lastly, our solution encompassed on-prem and off-site DR/BC capabilities.

c. Results

This was a multi-phase project that evolved over a number of years. After implementing this solution, our client has been able to cut processing time down on critical jobs. They also gained better control over their data and how it is maintained and protected. As a result, they now do regular DR tests and are more confident in this process and their ability to recover from disastrous event. Storcom still oversees this process and helped them build and maintain their DR run-book.
