  • Storcom can handle the complex minutiae of cloud provider’s service-level agreements so that our clients don’t get caught up in red tape and confusion down the road.

What do I Need to Know Before Signing a Cloud Storage Provider’s Service-Level Agreement (SLA)

Storcom helps companies navigate the red tape and headaches that come with signing cloud storage provider’s SLAs (service-level agreements) which can be complex and difficult to understand. Our customers will have the peace of mind that they are informed of the service terms and won’t be given surprise bills and fees in the event of an egress.

Storcom familiarizes our clients with the terms data throughput, recovery point objective (RPO), recovery time objective (RTO), and high-availability failover contingencies (HA). We believe that an educated client makes for a life-long client. SLAs may be complex, so Storcom can walk you through the process to ensure that you are protected:

What is data throughput?

Simply put, data throughput is the amount of data that can be transferred from a source to another location in a given period of time. It is the unit of measure used for the performance of RAM, hard drives, and internet/network connections. Throughput measures the rate of successful data transfers in a time frame. Throughput is not to be confused with bandwidth, which is the maximum amount of data that can be transferred on a network.

What is recovery point objective and recovery time objective?

Two of the most important terms in data protection and data recovery (DR) are recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO). These terms are the guides that organizations use in order to choose a backup plan that is optimized for their data. Recovery Point Objective and Recovery Time Objective are two critical terms that lay the foundation to identify and analyze potential strategies in your business continuity plan. These strategy options include those solutions that enabled resuming of business processes in a time period near or at the RTO/RPO.

What are mission-critical applications

A mission-critical application is a suite of programs or a single software program that must function continuously in order for an operation, process, or a segment of a business to be successful. Even brief downtime of a mission-critical application can have negative financial consequences. experiences even brief downtime, the negative consequences are likely to be financial due to loss of productivity. In the event of a mission-critical app failure, an organization might also suffer from damage to its reputation. While some applications might be mission-critical in one industry, that does not mean that they’re necessarily mission-critical in another and may be classified as important but unessential.

What are business-critical applications

Hosting builds and operates clouds for business-critical applications. The definition for business-critical (or mission-critical) applications typically meet this criteria:

  1. Software that is paramount to the operation and functionality of a business and needs to be functioning properly whenever that business is operating. Many online businesses are open 24/7, so this means that their business-critical software can NEVER go down.
  2. Business-critical applications need the capacity to be recovered so that the applications can rapidly be moved to an alternate data center in case of a disaster or accident at the primary data center.

Notable differences between business-critical and mission-critical applications

Business-critical and mission-critical are both terms that are used to describe the essential functions of an organization that must be completed without failure.  Business-critical applications are those which a business is reliant upon to carry out normal business operations which keep the business running. Mission-critical applications become business-critical when they are necessary for the success of a business.

What Requirements Do Business-Critical Applications Have

In order to prevent downtime, business-critical applications require much more complex architecture than a standard application. This is where expertise during the architecture, implementation, and operations phases is extremely important. During the architecture phase, high-availability architecture ensures that a single component failure like a firewall, database server, or load balancer can bring down the entire application.

Secondly, business-critical applications need a recovery capability in order to transition to an alternate data center, which is typically in a different location, if necessary.

Storcom is unique as service provider, since we have an on-site data center in Lombard, Illinois, which enables us to back up and protect our clients’ data. Additionally, we are subject matter experts on high-availability architecture and can ensure that your mission-critical data and applications are accessible whenever and wherever you need them.

How Do I Mitigate Challenges of Deploying a Hybrid Cloud Environment?

Learn More

Creating a hybrid cloud migration strategy as part of your IT infrastructure is your first step to mitigating hybrid cloud migration challenges. Not all public clouds are created equal, so it is important to decide which public cloud provider is best for your organization. Having a strong grasp on your data and processes will help enable your cloud integration to go more smoothly.

Also, it is important to note that the majority of successful cloud migrations aren’t typically completed in a single effort or project. It is wise to implement smaller projects with the end goal of a hybrid environment. Your company may benefit from building a limited hybrid cloud model in order to support specific workloads, and then build out additional services as your efforts in a hybrid cloud initiative show the benefits and value to your business and stakeholders.

How does a Hybrid Cloud Increase Agility?

Learn More

Private networks are costly to build, maintain, and expand. As a result, they limit a company’s agility to take advantage of new technologies and opportunities. Hybrid clouds enables companies to reap the benefits of both a public and private cloud. Business-critical data, applications, and operations can remain in a private cloud environment. The power of cloud computing can be leveraged in a public cloud environment. Public cloud computing resources increase a business’ scalability and agility. This is done by facilitating the ability to develop new applications. Cloud computing also runs analytics that would have been beyond the scope of a smaller organization with only a few servers to utilize. Hybrid clouds level the playing fields for companies of all sizes to compete with competitors who are more established. Rapid growth is now possible.

How does a Hybrid Cloud Increase Speed?

Learn More

A major advantage of hybrid cloud architecture is speed. While a multi-cloud or purely public cloud environment might be inherently faster than a hybrid cloud environment, IT staff is able to reduce latency and can optimize their network to make sure data is where it needs to be.

Hybrid cloud environments leverage edge computing architectures to further increase speed and locate crucial data and applications for its end users. Private portions of a hybrid cloud can be configured to be more purpose built to maximize resources and enable users to work faster and ultimately be more productive. Organizations can offload non-critical operations to a public cloud and configure their network to handle solely critical traffic.

How does a Hybrid Cloud Increase Control?

Learn More

A key benefit of a hybrid cloud solution is increased control for IT personnel. Companies can customize their private data and applications to a hybrid cloud architecture model in order to adjust their IT infrastructure to their needs. Increased control post-hybrid cloud migration is achieved when internal IT staff retains the ability to manage critical operations and IT infrastructure like servers and hardware.

Having control over IT assets in a responsive hybrid cloud architecture model is advantageous for organizations who want responsiveness in their cloud environments. Today’s fast-changing IT landscape has companies making changes frequently and adjusting and reconfiguring their cloud environments. Vital data assets need to be protected during those changes in order to have minimal disruption. Companies also need to be prepared for changes in their cloud provider’s SLAs and sudden loss of services.

What is a Hybrid Cloud?

Learn More

Put simply, a “hybrid cloud” is a cloud computing strategy which enables companies to combine different cloud environments that are connected to each other. These cloud environments can be private or third-party clouds, public clouds, virtualized infrastructures, or a mixture of on-premises and cloud computing environments.

Hybrid clouds are configured to operate independently of each other, and data that is shared across the communication channels is highly encrypted. Hybrid clouds are incredibly stable since a company’s critical data and workloads are stored in the private cloud.

What are the Advantages of Using a Hybrid Cloud?

Learn More

The hybrid cloud allows for maximized IT utility, resilience, and agility. Public and private clouds have different areas where they each excel, so companies are able to reap the benefits of each platform when using a hybrid cloud solution. Private clouds enable organizations to scale up and down based on demand, which often comes with a lower cost, and private cloud solutions offer superior security and control. Some companies prefer that their critical data is stored in a private cloud, and other data and applications can be stored in a public cloud to lower cost. When using a hybrid cloud, your company is able to find the most suitable use cases for your IT environment and your cloud experience and utility is not limited by an either/or decision.

A guide to managed cloud hosting: what is it and how can it help your business?

The benefits of cloud computing are well-documented at this point, from the highly elastic capacity to the potential cost savings. However, there are still some drawbacks that hold businesses back from embracing public cloud infrastructure. For many organisations, the high level of technical expertise that is required to set up and operate an enterprise-level public cloud system in a secure and efficient manner makes the task too expensive or burdensome.Advertisement – Article continues below…

Legacy technology: An obstacle to your digital ambitions

© Phuttaphat Tipsana | HMG has over £38 billion of digital transformation programmes underway yet over £400 billion of the Government’s operating revenues are reliant on legacy IT. And while your organisation needs to be agile, your legacy infrastructure is the polar opposite and doesn’t readily support this transformation.Since 2014, our team has transformed legacy technology platforms for several large central government departments. We initially tried to migrate legacy infrastructure …

Why software-enabled services are the new disruptor

As the business world accelerates toward a software product economy, your IT team needs to accelerate to keep pace with digital transformation. One way to do so is by creating software-enabled services (SESes) that deliver speed and agility and take a software factory approach to building software. These services facilitate your developers' desired outcomes, rather than just providing tools (on-premises or SaaS) that force them to create outcomes on their own. This trend, which lies at the co…

The 3 fundamentals of hybrid cloud architecture management

Hybrid cloud continues to rise in popularity since it promises the best of both worlds; the data center aspect offers more control over resources while a public cloud provides scalability and agility to the apps you deploy. However, enterprises need to ensure their applications are well-suited for a hybrid architecture. Follow these quick hybrid architecture and integration tips to ensure both your apps and developers can live comfortably in a hybrid cloud architecture. Applications that mo…

The Cost-Squeezing Effect of Hybrid Cloud Economics

Few would argue that public cloud doesn’t represent a revolution in IT procurement. But while it is scalable and convenient, it is not always cheap. In fact, 22% of enterprise decision-makers surveyed in 451 Research’s Voice of the Enterprise: Cloud, Hosting & Managed Services, Workloads and Key Projects 2018 study have moved some data from public cloud back to private cloud. Nearly a quarter of those did so because of spiraling costs.A combination of both public and private cloud in a hybri…

Benefits of a hybrid multicloud strategy

Cloud computing services and cloud storage both have a lot to offer. Public clouds bring about agility, elasticity, and speed, which make a company’s IT shop become a lot more responsive to the needs of its business. By shifting workloads to the cloud, businesses can make great strides in reducing costs and boosting productivity. This allows them to focus on their core operations and more quickly pivot to new market opportunities. But, as exciting as public clouds are, businesses that rely …

How tech suppliers are easing barriers to hybrid cloud adoption

Enterprise cloud adoption is growing steadily across the Asia-Pacific region, with most companies using some form of software as a service (SaaS) or running selected workloads on a public cloud infrastructure. Yet, even as some tech suppliers believe that, in the fullness of time, all enterprise workloads will move to the public cloud, the reality – at least for now – is the preference for a hybrid cloud set up for various reasons, such as performance and compliance requirements. That requir…

Public cloud providers’ network performance wildly varies

It is not easy measuring public cloud performance. I know. I've benchmarked clouds. So much depends on exactly which cloud configuration you use and your workloads; it's hard to make objective judgments. But, ThousandEyes, a cloud analysis company, in its second annual Cloud Performance Benchmark, has succeeded in measuring a major performance factor objectively: Public cloud providers' global network performance. In this study, ThousandEyes looked at the five major public cloud provid…

What does the future hold for the hosting industry?

One of my own earliest involvements in the tech field was working as a webmaster for a small Internet service provider in my home town. I learned a lot about networking and server technologies doing this and it created a love in me for things that come in small packages — like TCP/IP packets and Ethernet frames. Fast-forward several decades later to today and the world has become radically different as a result of Internet and computing technologies expanding into every aspect of our life fr…

Council Post: Building A Flexible Multicloud Strategy

As an IT manager, there’s never been more pressure to succeed. Your CTO is telling you to migrate data to the public cloud. The CIO or CSO is asking you to protect and secure that data. Your business managers want to build cloud-native applications. There’s one more critical variable: your customers. They’ve gone digital, and now they’re going mobile, which adds another layer of decision making. Data has arguably become an enterprise’s most valuable asset, and with good reason: It can be luc…
