Notable differences between converged and hyperconverged infrastructure

“Converged infrastructure” in an enterprise environment means more than simply replacing a few network components. Converged infrastructure requires an entirely new way of visualizing an organization’s network infrastructure and the kinds of IT personnel needed to support this type of IT infrastructure.

Traditional IT infrastructures were made up of technology silos. This included subject matter experts in storage, networking, systems administration, and software. Much of this has been changing over the past decade since virtualization has become a prominent technology that binds networks and servers together.

There are two ways that organizations can build a converged infrastructure:

  • VCE (a joint venture of Dell EMC, Cisco, and VMware)’s hardware-focused, building-block approach known as “converged infrastructure.”
  • Nutanix, VMware, Dell, HPE and others’ software-defined approach is called “hyperconverged infrastructure.”

The most important difference between converged and hyperconverged technologies is that each component in the building block is a discrete component that is used for its intended purpose (a server can be separated and is used as a server) in a converged infrastructure. The technology is software-defined in hyperconverged infrastructure; therefore, the technology is integrated and cannot be broken out into separate components.

What's better: Converged or Hyperconverged Infrastructure

It is difficult to say that one technology is better than another. Converged infrastructure (CI) brings the main components of a data center (compute, storage, networking, and server virtualization) together into a single chassis or rack. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) brings more integration of components through the use of software that creates a single logical unit. Hyperconverged and converged infrastructure bring different benefits and drawbacks to traditional IT infrastructure, and the choice between the two technologies depends on a multitude of different factors.

The main thing to keep in mind when deciding between hyperconverged and converged infrastructure are use cases, and it is imperative to define and identify application portfolios up front. In order to determine a modernization strategy, an application portfolio needs to be examined to identify how it maps to the overall mission. Each application is different, and certain types of applications can be better suited for a specific type of infrastructure. Certain workloads function differently in different types of infrastructure. Converged infrastructure may handle specific workloads better, since HCI does not have the same adaptability for unusual workloads.
